Career Clusters Majors Fair Panel Member - Response

Molly and Joanne,

I worked for a large company and they looked for entry level employees at job fairs. I also have interviewed with companies and had my resume improved at college career centers. These may all be good places to find out where hiring managers are looking for entry level resumes. I have observed that different companies use different resources to find employees. Sometimes contacting the company with an interesting job posting is a good way to ask how they prefer to receive a cover letter/resume and the employment application. Contacting the company may also provide the name of a hiring manager to speak with and send any thank you or follow-up letters.

Career Clusters Majors Fair Panel Member - Response

When my company is looking, we start with applications in house – via our web site. After we exhaust those, then we go online, usually Monster.com. Cover letters are important, and the more spots you post your resume the better.

Question for Career Clusters Majors Fair Panel Members

Joanne,

The question I would have like to have asked is: When hiring managers are looking for entry level employees, how do they find those resumes? Is the company website a good place to start an application? Do they find employees through job search websites such as Monster.com or CareerBuilder.com? Secondarily, especially if resumes are coming through online, how important is the cover letter?

Also, could you remind me of the name of the person who handles internships for the CIT department? As I said, I wonder if I'm ready for that yet, but I'd at leas like to talk to someone to get a feel for the process.

Thank you so much.

Molly Scherer

Knowledge is Power - Get Powerful!

The following suggestion comes from Chris Gerrib, CIT Advisory Board Member and Senior Vice President of Technology at Republic Bank of Chicago:

I would like to suggest something that you pass on to your students. More and more companies are pulling credit reports on job applicants. They are looking for character and risk – a person with a bad credit score is seen as more likely to engage in fraud. So, I recommend every student pull their own credit report.

Despite the incessant advertising, “FreeCreditReport.com” is NOT a free site. They are trying to sell you credit protection. The real free site is www.annualcreditreport.com and as the name suggests you only get one free report per year. However, I suggest everybody go there and get their report. Why?

1) If there are any errors on the report, you can get the process started to fix them.

2) Surprises are for birthdays. Knowing your credit score when you apply for a job allows you to be prepared.

3) If you do have legitimate bad credit, when applying for a job that does credit screening, tell the interviewer. Explain why this won’t happen again, and why they should try to get a waiver for you.

Knowledge is power – get powerful!
